Arie and Kathy Caton-Musto traveled to Erie PA over the weekend of January 26 and 27 for a show along the lake. I'm proud to say that Arie ended up placing with a Group 4 in the Terrier Group on both Saturday and Sunday, earning himself 66 'all breed' points to start 2019!

Arie attended the Novi MI 4-day cluster January 17 through 20, 2019 and ended up going Select Dog three of the four days.
Because of the number of dogs entered, earning Select Dog gave him three 5-point major GCH wins which brings his total number of Grand Championship points earned to 56 - so he is now officially over halfway to the 100 points needed for a Grand Championship Bronze designation. This boy continues to amaze me. He earned his Championship by the time he was 9 months of age, his Grand Championship 8 months later, and he is now past the halfway mark to a Grand Championship Bronze ... all before he turns 2 years of age. Arie (GCH Aardehond Make Me Smile) participated in the 2018 Mid-Ohio Cluster held in Columbus, OH over November 15, 16, 17, and 18, 2018.
There was a Border Terrier Club of America Supported Entry held all four days of the shows with fabulous trophies offered for Best of Breed, Best Opposite Sex, Select Dog and Select Bitch, and Winners Dog and Winners Bitch. This show cluster tends to be a nice entry of Border Terriers with both dog and bitch majors and this year's show was no different. There were 4 Dog Champions and 3 Bitch Champions entered each of the four days with Arie being one of the Dog Champions. Amongst the group of Champions included dogs that are high in the 2018 Border Terrier standings for Breed points and Owner Handler points. I was wondering how Arie would do since he was one of the younger Border Terrier Champions to compete at that show cluster and I'm happy to say that he had an awesome show! On Thursday at the Sandusky Kennel Club show, Arie went Best of Opposite Sex to earn 4 Grand Championship points. See results here. On Friday at the Dayton Kennel Club show, Arie went Select Dog to earn 5 Grand Championship points. See results here. On Saturday at the Lima Kennel Club show, Arie went Select Dog to earn 5 Grand Championship points. See results here. Arie's three placements at the 2018 Mid-Ohio Cluster earned him an additional 14 Grand Championship points towards reaching the AKC Grand Championship Bronze level. Do you own a pet first aid kit? I purchased one from my local PetPeople store and, thankfully, have not had to use it. But I have it on hand in case it is needed. If you do have a first aid kit - whether for humans or dogs, remember to check expiration dates periodically to replace any item that may expire before it is used.

On Saturday, he went Best of Breed for a 5 point GCH major and a Terrier Group 3. On Sunday, Arie went Best of Breed again for a second 5 point GCH major which finished his Grand Championship! Then on to the Terrier Group where he received a Terrier Group 1 and his first trip to the Best In Show ring. My friend, Jody, showed him this weekend (because of my continuing knee problems) and Arie showed awesome for her.
I am extremely proud of Arie. He earned his AKC Championship in January of this year at 9-1/2 months of age and now his Grand Championship at 18 months of age. His first show was the end of October last year so he has completed his Championship and his Grand Championship in less than 11 months! New GCH CH Aardehond Make Me Smile (Arie) (AKC pending of course) Photographs were taken both days so fingers crossed they look good. Will post when they become available! The Border Terrier Club of America's National Specialty was held in Greeley, Colorado the week of Labor Day. Unfortunately, I was not able to attend this year but I did place an ad, featuring Arie, in the catalog to celebrate him earning his AKC Championship at the beginning of the year.  Arie went to the Marion OH cluster this past weekend (July 27, 28, 29, 30) and ended up earning some more points and completing one of the three requirements needed to earn an AKC Grand Championship (GCH). He received Select Dog on Saturday and Sunday, earning 2 points each day. On Monday, Arie placed Best of Breed, earning a 3 point major. Arie earned two major wins when we attended the Detroit Kennel Club shows in Novi MI and his 3 point major at the Marion shows means he has now completed the GCH requirement for 3 major wins.
Arie came into the Marion cluster with 8 points so he is up to a total of 15 points and has earned 3 majors under 3 different judges. He defeated Champions of Record at the two shows in Novi so he needs to do that one more time, along with earning 10 more points for the Grand Championship. Over halfway there! No picture this weekend.  Happy 4th of July!
Did you know that there is a 30-60% increase in lost pets each year between July 4th and 6th. In fact, July 5th is one of the busiest days of the year for shelters. Please keep your 4-legged companions safe at home while you enjoy the firework displays in your community!  With Arie earning his AKC Championship in January 2018, I knew I wanted to spend this year working towards a Grand Championship for him. We attended the Detroit Kennel Club shows in Novi, MI on June 23 and 24, 2018 with great results.
On Saturday, June 23, Arie went Select Dog and Best of Breed Owner Handled for a 5 point major (and defeating Champions of Record) under Judge Robert Hutton. We had a photograph taken so it will be posted when it becomes available. On Sunday, June 24, Arie went Select Dog and Best of Breed Owner Handled again, this time for a 3 point major (and defeating Champions of Record) under Judge Elliott Weiss. Combining the wins for both days means Arie earned 8 points, along with two major wins and defeating Champions of Record two times for the weekend. To earn a Grand Championship, AKC's requirements are that a dog must receive three major wins under three different judges, defeat Champions of Record three times, and earn a total of 25 points. Arie's wins this past weekend have him well on his way towards meeting the requirements needed for a Grand Championship.  Going from earthdog to conformation in one week's time, Arie was entered in the Crawford County Kennel Club dog shows in Bucyrus, Ohio on May 5 and 6.
At 13 months of age, Arie is still a young dog ... his body is maturing but he still has a puppy brain seems like. And, even though we have been attending conformation classes since he was around 3 months old, we are still very much working on gaiting around the ring without pulling and freestacking for more than a handful of seconds. Arie does a great job on the table for the judge's exam (thank goodness!) so the floor work continues to be what we need to work on. At the Bucyrus shows, I thought Arie was finally starting to 'get it' with regard to the gaiting. He went Best of Breed both days and was Best of Breed Owner Handler on Saturday (only day it was offered). On Saturday, Arie ended up with a Group 2 in the Owner Handler Terrier competition and a Group 3 in the regular Terrier Group. On Sunday, Arie received a Group 4 in the regular Terrier Group. |
Tracy Van NielMy dogs and I participate in agility, earthdog, rally obedience, and conformation events. Additionally, both Reggie and Halo passed the American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test and Halo has been certified as a therapy dog. But most of all, my dogs are my housemates, companions, and bed warmers.
