He is going to be taking a bit of a break from the show ring starting this month. I am hoping that we will be able to participate in the Gem City November earthdog test and maybe even get better at going directly in the tunnel. Need to do that before earning a Qualifying ribbon will be possible, so fingers crossed!
I am very pleased to announce that Arie earned his Grand Championship Bronze title at the end of June 2019. Arie is my first Bronze level Grand Champion and I'm very proud of him.

![]() The Central Ohio Kennel Club held its Spring show over the weekend of April 20 and 21. I was the Health Clinic Chair for the weekend and had the opportunity to see a lot of dogs and their owners over the course of two days, including several rare breed dogs, who came to have health checks and participate in the FSS Open Show that COKC hosted on both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's events consisted of the health clinic, a puppy match, several breed specialties and an FSS Open Show. Sunday's events included the all-breed show, health clinic, 4 to 6 month puppy competition, breed specialties and a second FSS Open Show. Arie and I competed in the all-breed show on Sunday and ended up having a grand day. Arie won Best of Breed and we ended up placing with a Group 4 in the Owner Handler Terrier Group and a Group 3 in the Terrier Group. Awesome results for Arie! I was also honored and surprised to be presented with the Central Ohio Kennel Club's "AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship Award" for 2019 on Sunday, April 21. The Outstanding Sportsmanship Award is offered through AKC for clubs to present at their discretion with only one award given (per club) each year. With Arie's Best of Breed win, he now has a total of 97 points towards his Grand Championship Bronze title. Only 3 more single points to go! Halo's photograph was used as the 'model' for an article appearing in the May issue of Dogster magazine. The photograph was taken by Holly Hildreth Photography in 2011 during a photography session with the three girls (Halo, Hildy, and Bee). My scruffy adorable Miss Halo will be turning 14 years young this year!
Arie and Kathy Caton-Musto traveled to Raleigh, North Carolina for the 5-day Tarheel Cluster, held from Wednesday, March 20 through Sunday, March 24, 2019. This is a big show with a lot of the top dogs in the country in attendance.
With a nice group of Border Terriers in attendance, Arie's results for the 5 days of shows were awesome. He went Best of Breed on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday for three 5 point Grand Championship major wins and Best of Opposite Sex on Thursday and Friday for one 4 point and one 3 point Grand Championship major wins. Arie ended the Cluster with a total of 22 new Grand Championship points which now brings his total to 85. He only needs 15 more GCH points to earn his Grand Championship Bronze title! I am tickled to announce that Arie (GCH CH Aardehond Make Me Smile) is #5 in the January All-Breed Points ranking by Canine Chronicle for Border Terriers. Link here
The rankings, of course, fluctuate each month, depending on placements and number of shows each dog attends. But Arie's #5 ranking puts a smile on my face and brightens up the dreary Ohio winter days for sure :-) ! Arie and Kathy Caton-Musto traveled to Erie PA over the weekend of January 26 and 27 for a show along the lake. I'm proud to say that Arie ended up placing with a Group 4 in the Terrier Group on both Saturday and Sunday, earning himself 66 'all breed' points to start 2019!
Arie attended the Novi MI 4-day cluster January 17 through 20, 2019 and ended up going Select Dog three of the four days.
Because of the number of dogs entered, earning Select Dog gave him three 5-point major GCH wins which brings his total number of Grand Championship points earned to 56 - so he is now officially over halfway to the 100 points needed for a Grand Championship Bronze designation. This boy continues to amaze me. He earned his Championship by the time he was 9 months of age, his Grand Championship 8 months later, and he is now past the halfway mark to a Grand Championship Bronze ... all before he turns 2 years of age. Arie (GCH Aardehond Make Me Smile) participated in the 2018 Mid-Ohio Cluster held in Columbus, OH over November 15, 16, 17, and 18, 2018.
There was a Border Terrier Club of America Supported Entry held all four days of the shows with fabulous trophies offered for Best of Breed, Best Opposite Sex, Select Dog and Select Bitch, and Winners Dog and Winners Bitch. This show cluster tends to be a nice entry of Border Terriers with both dog and bitch majors and this year's show was no different. There were 4 Dog Champions and 3 Bitch Champions entered each of the four days with Arie being one of the Dog Champions. Amongst the group of Champions included dogs that are high in the 2018 Border Terrier standings for Breed points and Owner Handler points. I was wondering how Arie would do since he was one of the younger Border Terrier Champions to compete at that show cluster and I'm happy to say that he had an awesome show! On Thursday at the Sandusky Kennel Club show, Arie went Best of Opposite Sex to earn 4 Grand Championship points. See results here. On Friday at the Dayton Kennel Club show, Arie went Select Dog to earn 5 Grand Championship points. See results here. On Saturday at the Lima Kennel Club show, Arie went Select Dog to earn 5 Grand Championship points. See results here. Arie's three placements at the 2018 Mid-Ohio Cluster earned him an additional 14 Grand Championship points towards reaching the AKC Grand Championship Bronze level. Do you own a pet first aid kit? I purchased one from my local PetPeople store and, thankfully, have not had to use it. But I have it on hand in case it is needed. If you do have a first aid kit - whether for humans or dogs, remember to check expiration dates periodically to replace any item that may expire before it is used.
AKC has a helpful article that shares some tips on how to help your dog before you can get him or her to your vet or local pet emergency hospital for professional help. www.akc.org/expert-advice/health/emergencies-first-aid/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=20181025-nibble&utm_content=health-emergencies_first_aid-p3 Arie had a wonderful two days at the Licking River Kennel Club shows this past weekend. On Saturday, he went Best of Breed for a 5 point GCH major and a Terrier Group 3. On Sunday, Arie went Best of Breed again for a second 5 point GCH major which finished his Grand Championship! Then on to the Terrier Group where he received a Terrier Group 1 and his first trip to the Best In Show ring. My friend, Jody, showed him this weekend (because of my continuing knee problems) and Arie showed awesome for her.
I am extremely proud of Arie. He earned his AKC Championship in January of this year at 9-1/2 months of age and now his Grand Championship at 18 months of age. His first show was the end of October last year so he has completed his Championship and his Grand Championship in less than 11 months! New GCH CH Aardehond Make Me Smile (Arie) (AKC pending of course) Photographs were taken both days so fingers crossed they look good. Will post when they become available! |
Tracy Van NielMy dogs and I participate in agility, earthdog, rally obedience, and conformation events. Additionally, both Reggie and Halo passed the American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test and Halo has been certified as a therapy dog. But most of all, my dogs are my housemates, companions, and bed warmers. Archives
